Original 1986 Soviet Labor Poster – Strengthen Peace Through Shock Labor! – XXVII CPSU Congress – 27 × 45 cm / 10.6 × 17.7 in
An original 1986 Soviet labour propaganda poster, Strengthen Peace Through Shock Labor! links the work of the factory floor to the promise of international peace. Published in the year of the 27th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (XXVII съезд КПСС), it belongs to the early perestroika period, when economic modernisation and industrial acceleration, or uskorenie, were central themes of Soviet public messaging. Its slogan, «МИР КРЕПИ ТРУДОМ УДАРНЫМ», calls on the worker to strengthen peace through exemplary, high-output labour: the ideal associated with the Soviet udarnik, or “shock worker”.
The composition gives that political argument a literal industrial form. A ladle bearing the hammer and sickle pours molten metal into the monumental, three-dimensional letters of «МИР» (“PEACE”), making peace itself appear to be forged through production. Around this central image, a worker silhouetted against sparks, an atomic icebreaker and an inset Soviet star with the hammer-and-sickle motif connect individual effort with industrial capability and state power. Crimson red, deep teal blue, black and bright yellow lend the design its graphic force, while diagonal lines and sparks suggest movement and concentrated energy.
The explanatory panel at the bottom connects the Congress’s long-term economic programme, extending over a fifteen-year horizon, with the contribution of everyday work to preserving peace. Rather than treating labour and foreign policy as separate subjects, the poster presents productivity at home as a foundation of security abroad. Its architectural Cyrillic lettering and compact 27 × 45 cm format preserve a distinctive example of late-Soviet industrial imagery, made as the language of reform emerged alongside established symbols of collective endeavour.
