A profoundly beautiful and deeply nostalgic artifact of 1970s Soviet humanitarian graphic art — an original 1976 peace poster by Ukrainian graphic artist Heorhiy Shevtsov (Шевцов Георгій Іванович), published by Politvydav Ukrainy (Політвидав України), Kyiv, approved for print on 23 January 1976, in a run of just 34,000 copies.

The slogan is written in Ukrainian: “Хай завжди буде сонце!” — the Ukrainian rendering of the legendary 1962 Soviet children’s peace anthem May There Always Be Sunshine (Пусть всегда будет солнце), written by Arkady Ostrovsky and Lev Oshanin, which became the ultimate international anthem of Soviet peace campaigns, youth festivals, and anti-nuclear movements throughout the Cold War. Finding an official state-published version printed entirely in the Ukrainian language — rather than Russian — makes this a highly prized piece for regional historical collectors and a rare document of Ukrainian cultural identity within the Soviet system.

The composition is a masterclass in late-Thaw poetic minimalism. A mother and her joyful child — riding high on her shoulders, both looking upward into the light — are rendered in a gorgeous monochromatic teal stipple-shading technique, moving completely away from industrial machinery or strict political portraiture toward emotional resonance and soft gradient warmth. In the top-left corner, a dynamic multi-coloured rainbow appears as if drawn directly onto the poster with textured wax crayons, adding a childlike innocence that mirrors the poster’s message of protecting future generations. The dominant deep teal and cream palette, warmed by the yellow, orange, and red rainbow striping, gives the piece an exceptional mid-century cool that works as naturally in a nursery as in a design studio. At 60 × 90 cm, its commanding vertical scale makes it a spectacular standalone statement piece. The reverse carries a light handwritten archival inventory note in pink pencil (“Зуя”) from a historical Soviet distribution storage room — a small, intimate trace of the poster’s journey through time.
