An original Soviet sailing poster produced in 1970 for the 1971 5th Summer Spartakiad of the Peoples of the RSFSR, Yachting presents competitive sport through the clean geometry of wind, sail and water. Approved for print on 25 May 1970, ahead of the following year’s games, it belongs to the visual culture of Soviet mass sport: public imagery that linked athletic achievement with physical conditioning, collective participation and civic pride.

A segmented spinnaker in red, yellow, green and purple cuts across a deep-blue nautical field above stylised white waves. Rather than describing the scene through detailed realism, the composition reduces sailing to colour, shape and directional movement. Bold Cyrillic lettering and the event emblem, incorporating a red star, hammer and sickle, and the Roman numeral V, anchor the image to the fifth Spartakiad. The contrast between the multicoloured sail and cobalt water gives this large vertical sheet its lightness and graphic clarity.

The event’s title, “Spartakiad of the Peoples of the RSFSR”, refers to the many ethnic and national communities of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, the Russian republic within the USSR. It was a republic-level competition, distinct from the all-Union Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR. Organised under the Committee on Physical Culture and Sports under the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR, the games formed part of the Soviet Spartakiad tradition of large-scale multisport competition. This poster brings that institutional setting together with a distinctly modern sporting image. Its geometric abstraction recalls the economy of form associated with earlier Constructivist graphics, while its bright colour blocks place it within the broader language of mid-century poster design.
