K. Klementyeva – "Down with Tipping!" – 1925 – Official State Russian Museum Facsimile Edition – 58.5 × 87.8 cm / 23.0 × 34.6 in
A rare and museum-authorised facsimile of one of the most socially pointed posters of the early Soviet avant-garde — Ksenia Aleksandrovna Klementyeva’s 1925 agitprop broadside “ДОЛОЙ ЧАЕВЫЕ!” (“Down with Tipping!”), commissioned by the Azerbaijan Branch of the Union of Public Catering Workers (Нарпит) and the Cultural Department of the Azerbaijani Council of Trade Unions (А.С.П.С.). Published in 2004 by Palace Editions / The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, and printed on premium archival paper to replicate the ink depth and texture of the 1925 master copy. The reverse bears the official printed historical cataloguing stamp and copyright metadata of the State Russian Museum.
The design operates through a devastating visual argument. The upper panel — headed “РАНЬШЕ…” (“Before…”) — shows service workers bowing in submissive posture before wealthy bourgeois clients, the body language of Tsarist-era class subservience rendered in flat, high-contrast Constructivist geometry. The lower panel — “ТЕПЕРЬ” (“Now”) — shows a proud, emancipated Soviet waiter standing tall, arms crossed, refusing a cash bribe with quiet authority. The message is structural, not decorative: the new Soviet worker does not accept gratuities because he is not a servant — he is a citizen. Klementyeva integrates bold Cyrillic block typography directly into the geometric framework, a hallmark of the Constructivist agitprop tradition in which text and image are inseparable components of a single visual argument. Commissioned for the regional workforce in Baku during the NEP era — a period of ideological tension between market pragmatism and revolutionary principle — the poster addressed a very real social friction: the persistence of tipping culture as a remnant of pre-revolutionary class relations. Klementyeva (1896–1984) was one of the few prominent female voices in Soviet graphic design of the 1920s, and this work stands as one of her most resolved and historically resonant compositions.
An extraordinary acquisition for curators of Russian Constructivism, early industrial graphics, labour history, or Soviet feminist art history.
