Original 1970s Soviet May Day Die-Cut Poster – "Happy Holiday, Dear Comrades!" – Kremlin & Republic Flags – 60 × 40 cm / 23.6 × 15.7 in
An incredibly ornate and highly unusual piece of late-Soviet ephemera — an original May Day propaganda poster from the late 1970s or early 1980s bearing the slogan “С ПРАЗДНИКОМ, ДОРОГИЕ ТОВАРИЩИ! 1 МАЯ!” (“Happy Holiday, Dear Comrades! May 1st!”), produced by the Soviet state publishing system.
What sets this poster apart from the standard May Day broadside is its format: the lower border is factory die-cut, the vibrant scarlet greeting ribbon physically extending past the poster’s frame line — a rare production technique that gives the piece an almost three-dimensional, ceremonial quality. The central illustration depicts the iconic Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin, flanked on both sides by the meticulously rendered flags of all fifteen Constituent Republics of the Soviet Union — each flag distinct, each republic present and accounted for. The entire composition is encased in a magnificent gold-inked decorative border of stylised laurel leaves, oak branches, and five-pointed stars, crowned by the State Emblem of the Soviet Union at the top and a golden hammer and sickle at the base. The combination of imperial-style gold filigree with Soviet communist iconography marks a late-era design shift toward high-ceremonial pomp — the USSR dressing its ideology in the visual language of a dynasty. The sharp metallic-adjacent gold inks contrast beautifully with the deep crimson and sky-blue tones of the republic flags. At 40 × 60 cm, the elegant vertical silhouette works brilliantly on narrow walls, columns, or within deep-set wooden frames. Artist unknown; unsigned.
