This is an original 1969 Soviet propaganda poster by Igor Kominarets (1923–1998), published in Moscow in preparation for the centenary of Vladimir Lenin’s birth (1870–1970). Trained at the prestigious VGIK (All-Union State Institute of Cinematography) and known for his mathematically precise drafting, Kominarets designed political and social graphics for IzoGiz, Iskusstvo, and Plakat throughout his career. This centenary piece is among his most resolved compositions.

The design is spare and commanding: a bold, high-contrast stencil portrait of Lenin silhouetted against a deep crimson block, with his birth year 1870 rendered below in monumental three-dimensional architectural typography with gradient shading — a single stylised red carnation, the traditional Soviet symbol of revolutionary honour and remembrance, resting across the numerals. The radical composition, restricted palette, and heavy use of negative space place this firmly in the modernist graphic tradition of the late Thaw era, far removed from the crowded heroic tableaux of earlier Soviet agitprop.

At 43 × 67 cm, this medium format frames beautifully as a standalone statement or within a gallery wall. A highly collectible piece for curators of Soviet graphic design, Lenin centenary ephemera, or mid-century political art.
